ACTIVITIES

Spend a half or full day hiking along the Rio Celeste. The Rio Celeste is named after the color of its watera bright, jewel-bluecaused by many dissolved, natural minerals, like cobalt.
A guide will take you through secondary and primary rainforest, and pack in your lunch, fresh juices and water. From trailhead, it is only a 2 km. (1.2-mi) hike to the breathtaking Rio Celeste waterfall. The adventurous can swim near pounding 70-foot falls.

| A 7 km (4.3-mi) hike takes you beyond the falls and deeper into the rain virgin rain forest, home to pumas, tapirs and other animals. You will trek to the streaming hot and cool springs of the local volcanoes, mineral mud pits and the blue lagoon of the Rio Celeste. Allow a full day to hike, swim, lunch, and rest up afterwards. |

We offer horses for all levelsfrom first time riders to cowboys for children and adults. We ride for hours through the ranch, meadows and rainforest, through the green valleys of farms and hillsides, macadamia fields, fruit groves and open pastures. Small children can ride with their parents or our guide.

BIRD WATCHING
La Carolina Lodge is a birdwatcher's paradise. Follow your eyes and ears and you are sure to spot many varieties of toucans, antbirds, macaws, parrots, trogons, and manakins. Every morning, you'll watch resident mandibled-toucans feeding on bananas beside the kitchen porch. Check out a list of just some of the species sighted at the lodge.

Las Pumas Wildcat Refuge
This wildcat refuge is only 50 minutes away, offering an incredible, up-close experience with big cats native to Costa Rica. Jaguars, pumas, margays, ocelots and jaguarondis as well as macaws, parrots and toucans are cared for in this non-profit shelter. Las Pumas is well worth a visit while staying at the lodge.
Cano Negro
Caño Negro is a 2 hour drive away. It is one of the most wild and remote nature refuges in Costa Rica. Hundreds of thousands of migratory birds flock here, providing some of the best bird watching in the country.
Many reptiles such as alligators, turtles and caimans line the banks. Caño Negro also a prime fishing site for tarpon, snook, and bass when in season. Take a nice boat trip with guide and experience all the wildlife.
Volcano Arenal
The spectacular and highly active Volcano Arenal and the village of La Fortuna are only a 1-2 hour drive away. |
