MAPS, DIRECTIONS & TRANSPORTATION La Carolina Lodge: Map

La Carolina Lodge is an escape off the well-beaten tourist path. However, its central location in northwestern Costa Rica makes it an easy, quick trip by car, close to several beaches, the Liberia airport and main roads. In addition, its highway is one of the most scenic and well maintained in the country

DIRECTIONS BY CAR

From Canas or Liberia

  • From the Pan American Hwy 1, turn north onto the Upala Hwy (Route 6). (Hint: The Upala Hwy turn-off is within 1 km (0.62 mi) of the "Restaurant Rio Corobici," located on the Corobici river, just north of Canas).
  • Drive approx. 35 km (22 mi) to the town of Bijagua. About 6 km (3.75-mi) beyond Bijagua, look for a sign on your right to "La Carolina Lodge," (100 m past Bar Mirador).
  • Turn right at the sign for La Carolina Lodge.
  • Follow the gravel road for 6 km (3.75 mi) to the town of San Miguel. There, you will see a couple of signs pointing the way to La Carolina Lodge, just 1 km (0.62 mi) away.

From Volcano Arenal, La Fortuna

  • Follow the road towards San Rafael de Guatuso.
  • Take hwy 4 towards Upala, pass the village of Katira. and After app. 10 km, you will find a sign for La Carolina Lodge on the right side, in the village of San Luis, indicating a left turn. Turn left at the sign for La Carolina Lodge on the gravel road, just beside the elementary school of San Luis.
  • Follow the small unpaved road, up to the village of Santo Domingo.
  • At the square of this village you will find a sign indicating a right turn towards La Carolina Lodge. Follow this road for approx 5km.
  • Just after crossing the river at the second bridge you will see the gate “La Carolina Lodge.

A Scenic Route from San Jose to the lodge

Take the road through Alejuela (in front of airport SJO) towards the Poas Volcano and then towards the Peace Lodge. From there, folow the signs to Volcano Arenal. When you see the road sign for San Rafael de Guatuso, take this road. Then follow the directions described From Volcano renal / La Fortuna

Directions by bus

There is an excellent bus service (running five times daily) from Canas towards Upala, you have to get out in Bijagua. In front of the bus are normally a couple of taxi’s that can take you up to the lodge. If not please, walk to the supermarket “Payca” and ask them for a taxi. The taxi from Bijagua to La Carolina Lodge is  approximately $16.00- $20.00

DISTANCES BY CAR

To/From Liberia Int'l airport = 1 1/2 hr. drive
To/From La Fortuna (Volcano Arenal) = 1 1/2 - 2 hour drive
To/From San Jose Int'l airport = 3 1/2 hr. hour drive
To/From Tamarindo/Flamingo beaches = 2 1/2 to 3 hr. scenic drive
To/From Bijagua (bank, gas station, market, restaurant) = 12 km (7.4 mi)
To/From San Miguel (local cantina with snacks, ice, beer) = 1/2 km (0.75 mi)

Transportation

We highly recommend Liberia (LIR) International Airport.
Airport transfers may be available to and from the Liberia International airport with advance notice. Cost is $80.00 one way. We have a reliable taxi driver with a 4x4 suv  that accommodates up to 5 persons.

There is also an excellent bus service (running five times daily) from Canas to Bijagua. A taxi from Bijagua to La Carolina Lodge is approximately $16.00-$20.00.

Renting a car

The easiest way to see Costa Rica and to get to La Carolina Lodge is to rent a car.
